CLINICAL TRIAL SHOWS

1. Cissus Quadrangularis Linn (UNION) enhances the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal STEM CELLS into ALP +ve osteoblast and increased extracellular matrix calcification. ( Stimulates Osteoblastogenesis) (1)

2. CQL influences the rate of fracture healing by influencing early regeneration of all connective tissues involved in the healing & quicker mineralization of callus. [2,3)

3. 33 to 55 % reduction of fracture healing period.(4,5)

4. Achieves 90% tensile strength in 6 wks. where 60% tensile strength gain in the controls. (6,7,8,9)

5. A study shows Cissus Quadrangularis Linn (UNION) extract on the healing process of experimental Animal reduction in healing period(10,11)

6. The effect of the Cissus Quadrangularis Linn (UNION) is not due to its vitamin C content alone, the systemic role of Cissus Quadrangularis Linn (UNION), which is responsible for greater mobilization of mucopolysaccharides from the tissues into the blood and earlier utilization of the substance helps for faster healing process. [12,13]

7. Enhances mineralization of callus, by increase in mucopolysaccharides level and also causes proliferation of osteoblastic, chondroblastic and cartilage proliferation.(14,15)

8. Cissus Quadrangularis Linn (UNION) increases uptake of minerals, calcium, sulpher & strontium by the osteoblasts in fracture healing.(16.17)

9. Phosphorus (P32) isotope study confirm early mineralization. This is followed by early demineralization so that the callus becomes remodeled to take a normal shape of the bone. These findings further confirmed that the Cissusquadrangularis has favourable action in the rate of healing of fracture in experimental animals(18,19)

11. Clinical study on 16 patients on various types of fractures on external application of paste of Cissus Quadrangularis Linn - in 6 cases 40% reduction in the healing time, in 8 cases 53% reduction in the healing time and poor in 1 case with 7% reduction in healing time. Clinically in about 80% of the cases, excellent results were observed and in the remaining 14% of the cases the results were good. Only in one case there was no demonstrable effect. It was hypothesized that CQL helps in the earlier formation of collagen fibers leading to earlier calcification and callus formation. [21,22,23,24]

12. Human trials conducted at Nagpur Medical college shows that the average fracture healing of those patient which is known to be normally 16 to 20 wks, reduced to 12-14 wks. Confirmed radiographically. (25)
